nagia: (vs; ashley; 51 flavors of pure amazing)
Dear everyone:

HA HA HA DISREGARD MY PREVIOUS POST I [INSERT ACTIVITY HERE].

Also, I am the biggest moron on this side of the planet (....well, second-biggest, Sarah Palin is pretty damn dumb).

In other news, recent meta has sharpened my appetite for dealing with the Shadowsverse crew. They are all a bunch of assholes, except for Corentin and Cazgo (one of whom has her own issues involving her demon semi-fiance and the other of whom works very, very hard to seem like a brainless surferdude goofball), and I love them anyway (except for Dereth, who somehow manages to play the "abusive dad," "clueless ex," and "that's CAPTAIN rigid tightass to you" cards all at once--no, don't ask me to explain).

[personal profile] kaigou's recent post (for a value of "recent" that includes "in the past six months") has gotten me thinking about white/black~bright/dark~right-hand/left-hand symbolism, and the way I use it in Shadowsverse.

To drop into TV Tropes parlance, Shadowsverse itself is a trainwreck of three tropes: Dark Is Not Evil, Light Is Not Good, and Good Is Not Nice. There is very specific color symbolism: black magicians and white mgicians, one is "evil," and one is "good." Thanks to the color symbolism, the 'verse may read as a Pointed Look at racism, especially since all the major recurring characters are PoCs. But the truth is, Shadowsverse is, at its core, about religion.

But the major points of the 'verse have always been: A) "people" as a rule are roughly the same on the good/evil scale, B) good and evil get a lot murkier when you're riding the high horse of a cause or religion, and C) people atop the high horses of causes/religions tend to do more harm than good.

It's my angry "Seven years in Christian schooling SD:LKHSG:HGH I HATE CHRISTIANS WILL THEY ALL PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP" screed, in book form. Because if there was one thing I saw, over and over and over, repeated ad nauseum by not only students but teachers, professors, chapel speakers, parents, was the complete and total erasure of other faiths, other creeds. The people on the "right-hand" path couldn't fucking get the idea through their heads that the the rest of the world followed a separate path, and they could scream themselves hoarse and never change a thing, nor have any right to.

And at some point, I started formulating a world where the left-hand path was in control and always had been, where the right-hand path was shown to be just as vicious, just as hurtful, just as destructive as the left-hand path at its worst.

But thanks to [personal profile] kaigou's post, I'm starting to wonder: am I derailing or co-opting racial discussion by using deliberate colour symbolism to make a different point? Or does the implied point that "black/dark/left-hand" and "white/light/right-hand" are ultimately nothing more than labels make it permissible?

READY… FAITO!

REPLACEMENT SCRAPPY

Name: Corentin Thierry
Age: 24
Hometown: Anais, Atlantiq

Appearance: A boyish blond, often seen in dress clothes but who never /actually/ looks business-like. The back of his shirt is usually untucked, or his shoes are scuffed and in need of polish. On the days he's got all that together, his tie doesn't match or his belt's off center. Eyes just on the brown side of hazel, with flecks of green that vary in intensity and notability based on his mood, the angle of view, ambient lighting, and what he's wearing. Given a choice, he prefers shades of green that head on into blue and gray. He generally gels his hair into something that may have been designed to look artfully mussed and usually just gives the impression of bedhead.

Personality: Above all, Corentin is easy going. He's too young to have hit "completely unflappable," but he's certainly on his way. It takes quite a lot to unnerve him, and even more to make him angry. He doesn't take the job personally. Nor does he take Dereth's casual and seemingly remorseless bastardry personally. For all that he can't seem to tame his wardrobe, for the most part, he's a cool and competent young man, breezing through life and aiming for… well, wherever he lands, really. In addition to his breezy attitude, he happens to like helping others. Oh yeah, and he can surf.

History: Anais is a seaside town, with a relaxed atmosphere and a lyrical, liquid accent similar to the sound heard in Hadrienne. Corentin grew up there, raised by Francophone parents. He has a younger sister, who was always better than he was in the arcane. She's in college now, studying to be a teacher of Occult Sciences. He had a good relationship with his parents. It is because of his compassion for others that he became a Dragoon. Despite his casual attitude, Corentin's competence assured him a place as the top of his class in the Dragoon Academy.

REPLACEMENT GOLDFISH

Name: Jean-Camille Favre
Age: 24
Hometown: Vladiretheh, Treumph

Appearance: A willowy (bordering on androgynous) blonde. She's usually seen in men's dress clothes, down to a matching and perfectly-knotted tie, usually but not always silk. Her belt always matches her shoes, her gloves and scarf always match her coat. She does not wear earrings or jewellery. In short, she always looks professional and together, but has no perceivable desire to look or be traditionally feminine. Her eyes are on the green side of hazel, with flecks of brown that vary by lighting, what she's wearing, and the angle of view. She freckles easily. She keeps her hair long, but she prefers neat updoes and braids. When she's at home, she leaves it long and simply pulls it into a loose twist.

Personality: Whereas Corentin is easy-going, good-natured and casual, Jean-Camille is smooth and professional. Jean-Camille is focused, goal-oriented, and headed straight for the top, if she has anything to say about it. "Put together" is a good word for her. So is "sharp." Just like Corentin, it takes a lot to startle her and even more to make her angry. She has a healthy separation of "business" from "personal" and is, in addition, an intensely private person. Whether she has a super-secret "girly" side or not is something no one she works with will ever know. It may be of some interest to note that she volunteers at a community center on Wednesdays and Sundays, teaching ball room dancing in the afternoons and women's self defense in the evenings.

History: Jean-Camille grew up in Vladiretheh, with an older brother who was good at everything and is currently teaching Occult Sciences at a community center. Jean-Camille's parents were always pushing her to be as competent as her brother was. As a teen, inbetween bouts of trying to live up to their expectations and fighting them as hard as she could, she often walked through Vladiretheh. It was during this time she fell in love with Stonetown, the oldest part of the capital, and determined that she would live there at any cost. Her focus and drive propelled her to the top of her class in the Dragoon Academy.

Notes: this thing is hideously incomplete and feels like Johnny Truant of House of Leaves and I'm not sure how much sense it makes. Feel free to poke at it.

A Tea Party With My Shadow

I blame the fact that it happened at all on the idea that it could happen, which I blame on a good friend who shares my name but isn't actually related to me. )
