It's international book week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 52, post the 5th sentence. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your post.

Sayal, one of the bride's brothers, hurled himself at Achmed, one of the groom's brothers, cousins of both gleefully joining the fight.

Resurrected, because I can:

I will post the names of all the files in my WIP folder(s), regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Choose one (1), and I will post a random line or two.

I'm just going to warn you now: these are very literal filenames. Yes, there is actually a system to this. Yes, it does make sense to me.

Ganked from [personal profile] telesilla: Out of curiosity, if I was chained up in your attic/study/basement/library/secret lair, and I had to write you one story, what would you ask for? Or alternately, what's something you always hoped I'd write but think isn't likely to happen?

This is what you get when you combine that "one sentence from your WIPs" meme with open letters to your fics.

Dear "These Graces That Hold Me":

Please stop being so difficult to write. Also, please stop throwing Fang's verbal mannerisms into my everyday speech, thanks.

"There has to be a way," she says while the very beginnings of a plan spool together in her head, tightening tiny knots in the loose, unravelled mass of threads that her mind has become.

Dear "Gifts and Treasures":

Something needs to happen, damn you!

For all that this crumbling castle was brand new, was potentially lethal territory, following Yuffie was exquisitely familiar.

Dear "First My Left Foot":

An actual plot--or at least a few more specifics on the conflicts--would be nice. So would a first line.

For an instant Lightning entertained that idea that if she'd known this was what Fang and Vanille had meant by, "Wake up," she'd have stayed asleep.

Dear "Hollow Hearts":

Please, please, for the love of the Watergod, PLEASE decide whether you're an angsty examination of moving on/nightmares, or whether you're a moody (but snappily witty) exploration of nightmares, growing up, and friendhsips that become something up.

Vincent's 'do something about this' expression turned sour like vinegar, morphed from mild disapproval into full-blown 'You are a bad influence on children, I KNEW it.'

The Why I Write Fanfiction Meme:

Bold any reasons that apply to you, strike out any that don't (if you feel like it), and add three (or more, or less) reasons of your own to the bottom.

1. To explore themes that I don't get to see in mass media using characters I love.
2. Because it's fun.
3. Because mass media does a crappy job of representing my race, gender, and sexual orientation.

4. Because I can get more people aboard my ship writing a story than a manifesto.
5. Because TV science-fiction doesn't explore its science-fiction premises in enough depth.

6. Because it's a gift I can give a stranger and know they will enjoy it.
7. Because I resonate emotionally with the characters what I read and watch, and want to find out why by writing about it.
8. Because every tale is a universe, often with fascinating nooks and crannies that the original author never explored.

9. Because I've made some of my best and dearest friends through this very wacky hobby.
10. Because the world the creator made is vast, and I want to see more of it.

11. Because writing as a communal experience is amazing.
12. Because I can.
13. Because I get so much enjoyment from reading fan fiction that I want to contribute to the community by providing enjoyment for other fans.

14. When I become interested in particular actors and/or characters, sometimes I want to explore them in different contexts than their canons would ever allow.
15. I enjoy writing but I feel ambivalent about trying to get published; writing fan fiction frees me by removing the pressure to sell from consideration.
16. Because every time I write something, I learn more about writing. And myself. And my readers.
17. Because someone can find it and know that there are other people out there who respond to media that way.
18. Because writing porn and having someone say, "this is hot!" is an empowering experience.

19. Because telling stories is what I do, and I base my stories on the world around me, including things that I read, watch, and listen to.
20. Because sometimes I just want to focus on the story itself rather than getting bogged down in the backstory.
21. Because as a person of color, I am invisible in nearly all science fiction and fantasy, on screen or in print, and I want to see myself reflected in the stories I love.

22. Because it allows me a place to experiment with the nuts and bolts of writing well.
23. Because there is always another nook, another cranny, another side, another angle to look at, and the best way for me to find those angles is to write them.
24. Because "What if..." is my favorite question.

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment. (That way you're not leading the questions asked to fit the characters.)

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments.

For example:

'One, Nine, Eleven and Fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from Four. Do they succeed?'
'Under what circumstances might Five and Seven fall in love?'
'Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?'
'What would Two experience in Silent Hill?'
'What Pokémon would Eight have?'
'Write a drabble in which Two and Twelve FIGHT CRIME.'

Pick one (or more!) of my fandoms and I will tell you...

1. The character I first fell in love with
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer
6. The character I would shag anytime
7. The character I'd want to be like
8. The character I'd slap
9. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise
11. Favorite character
12. My five favorite characters
13. My five least favorite characters
14. Which character I am most like
15. My deep, dark fandom secret

Okay so [ profile] aymiah tagged me for the five things meme:

Not actually my baby! My baby is Yuffie Kisaragi, but a Misao is fine too! I've been part of RK fandom off and on since '02 or '03, and Misao has been among my favorites since my first watch-through. I didn't actually sit down and watch the full series as a deliberate "I AM GOING WATCH THIS ANIME" until... god, '06? I was a freshman in college. And I liked Sano and Saitou and then this GIRL appeared on screen and I went WHO IS THAT OMG and then I read the manga and I still loved her and uh so THERE. That's the story.
Definitely my favorite thing to do. I would like to eventually write lots and make lots of money off it. A day without anything worked on, writing wise, is a day wasted.
My other favorite thing to do. I am huge, huge final fantasy nerd, to the point of listening to remixes of Final Fantasy music, having Opinions on the pronunciation of Tidus's name, shipping Cecil/Rosa like crazy, and having Weird Theories about how Squall-Rinoa-Seifer is just Cecil-Rosa-Kain in different clothes. I am passing familiar with all of them, save III and V, and VI is the only one I've made no effort to play (I associate it with douchebags).
Oh god where do I even start. A long long time ago--back in late '04/early '05--there was this sequence of roleplays done, using the cast of and following the storyline of Suikoden IV. Except it was insane and cracky and just IDEK start here and just poke around it, okay, it had jokes like "Sigurd has weak ankles and Hervey likes to set him on fire," and then the interests lists were CRAZY. One of those interests was the "Saruman Boob Cannon." It is named for a plot point in Suikoden IV that is used to destroy AN ENTIRE ISLAND--except it's this statue of Saruman holding this, like, orb thing. Hence, Saruman Boob Cannon. I listed it as an interest because A) hilarity and B) as a sign of affection for thehighseas. Also oh god now I want to go replay Suikoden IV.
Let me explain. I first saw this at AWA a couple of years ago--possibly my first or second AWA? And when it was over the lovely Sherry and I looked at each other with, for serious, this expression: O_O and we were both like "What the hell was that?" "I think we just saw the Japanese short film's answer to THE MATRIX." "That was so cool! I have to get my hands on it!" But we didn't ever get our hands on it until, oh, two years ago? Three years ago? That Halloween when I was still dating [ profile] xorle. And it was one of the things we stayed up all night to watch, and it was still awesome, and I just associate it with some of the best times in my life.

You can learn a lot about someone by the music they listen to. So here is the game! Hit shuffle on your ipod or mp3 player and write down the first 25 songs. No cheating or skipping songs that are shameful. That is the fun! Then tag your friends leave it up so your friends can steal~

Ganked from [personal profile] telesilla: Give me two characters from different fandoms you know I'm familiar with, and I'll give you a dialogue happening between the two of them. Without justifying how the crossover would work, how their worlds clashed, or how they could even meet each other. Just a silly crossover conversation with no backstory, for fun.
