So, in the absence of much else to do, I've started reading Locke & Key. Between it and Joe Hill, L&K's up for at least three Eisners, and I've got to say they're well-deserved.

The story is engaging and literary. Joe Hill's got the skill to telegraph the right punches and keep the gut-punches hidden so you're suckered. The art is fantastic, the Locke children are lovable, and the adult characters actually manage to pull their own weight.

I didn't originally like Tyler as much as I do now. He's grown on me, although I am still aware of his flaws. Kid tries to take too much on himself, and he can be pretty damned self-absorbed -- but he's a teenager, and he's doing the best that he can.

Bode, the youngest child, is absolutely precious. He reminds me of myself as a kid, with his crazy-vivid imagination and his ability to be independent of other kids. But I sort of think he's designed to: Bode is the every-us. We were all Bode when we were six, or we like to tell ourselves that we were.

But most of all, I love Kinsey. Both what she's accomplished with herself and the prices she's paid for it. I can see where she's coming from, and I can see where she's gone. Maybe not where she's going, but she's achieved badass and paid a price, and I love that.

Totally, totally recommend this series to people.
