Well, I finally picked up the last disc of Book 2 (Earth) and the first disc of Book 3 (Fire). I have now seen "Appa's Lost Days."

I say that I don't like Aang, but that's just my inherent dislike of the "Jesus figure" compounded by my automatic disinterest in the focal male lead. Essentially, I can be very fond of him while I'm watching him, and analyze him fondly, but I've just never fallen in love with him. (Sokka? Cracks me up. Then again, Sokka's flaws and strengths appeal to me more than Aang's do.) I do acknowledge that Aang is a really good character, and he's a generally great guy.

"Appa's Lost Days" made me bawl. Cruelty to animals--particularly Appa, who understands what's happening in a limited capacity (as much as anyone can understand that kind of cruelty being directed at them) and reminisces wordlessly on his friendship with Aang, and it's heartbreaking--always gets to me, and Appa is such a well-loved character.

I actually almost had to stop watching, it was so painful.

And immediately after, I watched "Lake Laogai." Despite Jet's death, I didn't cry nearly as much. Jet has always been one of my favorite characters. I loved him from the start. He's just so broken and wrong about everything--but he's understandably wrong. His completely messed up, warped viewpoint makes sense to me.

Which is not to say that the pain in his past in any way excuses the shit he's pulled. Destroying villages? Not okay. For some reason, I love him anyway.
